On Psych Central many of the bloggers are participating in the APA Mental Health Blog Party 2011 and I decided that I would do the same. The reason being is that I am tired of the shame that is associated with mental health issues. That is the whole reason for this blog.
Okay who made the comment that if I felt so strongly about it why don’t I use my real name? The answer is very simple. I work in corporate America and I support people in my family. If I didn’t support the parental units I would be throwing my real name around like it was confetti. Unfortunately in the today’s world, where understanding and acceptance is key, publishing about your fight with mental illness is still not accepted. In fact it can and does get used against people.
Oh I heard that! Why write the blog? The answer to that is simple also. I refuse to give in to the ignorance that still surrounds mental illness. Mental illness is not going away. Ignoring it makes it worse. It forces people to be reluctant to ask for help, to do what is best for them and their loved ones. Not to mention the connection between mental and physical health. There is such a tie between the two and yet we continue to ignore that fact in so many ways.
My hope is that my blog helps someone other than just me. It helps me because it allows me to vent and to work through some difficult thoughts. My goal is to work to further the acceptance of mental illness in this world. Hopefully I achieve that on some small level.
